Tips from the Field: Go With the Flow — and the Photo Will Follow

Some of the best photography moments happen when you least expect them. During our New Orleans photography workshop, participants arrived anticipating classic cityscapes — the iconic architecture, historic streets, and vibrant balconies of the French Quarter. What they found instead were unforgettable experiences that no itinerary could predict.

Unexpected Moments in New Orleans

Walking through the city, we stumbled into a lively street dance. Moments later, we joined a second line parade honoring ancestors, capturing images full of movement, emotion, and cultural significance. These were moments that weren’t on the schedule, yet became some of the most memorable shots of the trip.

For photographers, this is a reminder: some of your best work comes when you embrace the unexpected. New Orleans street photography is full of surprises, from spontaneous music performances to colorful celebrations in the streets.

Tip for Photographers: Let Curiosity Lead the Way

An itinerary is just a jumping-off point. While preparation is important, flexibility is key. Stay curious, watch for the unplanned opportunities, and be ready to capture the story as it unfolds. Often, these moments — the unposed, unscripted, and surprising — become the images that define your trip.

Looking Ahead to Future Adventures

This philosophy of staying flexible and embracing the unexpected applies to every photography adventure. Whether we’re exploring the French Quarter, drifting through the Louisiana bayou, or chasing light in the red rocks of Moab, the most memorable moments are often unplanned. If this approach to photography excites you, I’d love to have you join me on a future Hunt’s Photography Adventure — there’s always a new place, story, and surprise waiting to be captured.
